All the Records Virat Kohli Broke with the Century against New Zealand in World Cup Semi-final

During India’s 2023 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, Virat Kohli achieved a remarkable milestone by scoring his 50th century in one-day internationals, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. This feat comes after Kohli equaled Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI centuries against South Africa on November 5 at the Eden Gardens.

In the 2023 World Cup alone, Kohli has notched up an impressive six centuries, with the one against New Zealand marking his fifth in all ODI World Cups and his third of the current tournament. Kohli had previously scored a century on his World Cup debut against Bangladesh in 2011 and followed it up with another against Pakistan in 2015. Notably, he is only the third Indian, after Sourav Ganguly and Rohit Sharma, to achieve centuries in knockout matches of the ODI World Cups.

Kohli’s sensational form in this edition of the World Cup has seen him break several records previously held by Sachin Tendulkar. With a total of 80 international centuries, Kohli now holds the records for the most runs in a single edition of an ODI World Cup and the most fifty-plus scores in any ODI World Cup. During the semi-final, Kohli surpassed Ricky Ponting to claim the third position in the list of most runs in one-day internationals.

The Indian former captain’s consistency has been a highlight of this World Cup, having failed to go past 50 only twice in the 10 matches played so far. Notably, Kohli’s resurgence after a period of poor form included a maiden T20I hundred against Afghanistan and an ODI century in Bangladesh.

At 35, Virat Kohli is on the cusp of joining Sachin Tendulkar as the second cricketer to achieve 100 international hundreds across formats. His performances in 2023 have made him the second-highest run-scorer in one-day internationals, with no other batsman having scored more ODI hundreds than Kohli’s six in the calendar year.
