All the records broken at Cricket World Cup 2023 so far

The quadrennial ICC ODI Cricket World Cup is on here and promises another action-packed edition full of dramatic chases, high run totals, and incredible bowling demonstrations. The one-day international is the most preferred format of cricket for the majority of fans.

It’s not as technical and slow as test cricket, and players don’t play as recklessly as they do in Twenty20. The ODI games last a day and can be a good source of entertainment for the whole family, especially when the match falls on a holiday.

Numerous records breaking throughout the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup have kept statisticians and record-keepers on their toes.

Teams and players have established themselves and broken records with everything from one-inning performances to sustained excellence across several campaigns.

Here are the key records to be broken at the Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

All the records broken at Cricket World Cup 2023 so far

Fastest to 50 CWC wickets: Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc, the Australian left-arm fast bowler, has been a standout performer in some previous ODI World Cups. His 50th wicket came against India in the ODI World Cup 2023, achieving a significant milestone in just 19 matches, making him the fastest to reach this feat. His ability to swing the ball at high speeds and deliver deadly yorkers has made him a force to be reckoned with in World Cup cricket.

Fastest CWC century: Aiden Markram

South Africa’s Aiden Markram smashed the record for the fastest World Cup century in the 2023 edition. He reached his hundred in just 49 balls, batting against Sri Lanka in South Africa’s first game of the 2023 World Cup.  Markram finished his innings with 106 off 56 balls and helped set South Africa a giant target of 400+ against a tough team and 1996 World Cup winner Sri Lanka.

Biggest CWC team total: South Africa (428/5)

South Africa broke the record of Australia from 2015 with a mammoth 428 for five against Sri Lanka in its 2023 World Cup opener in Delhi. The Proteas became the first team to record three 400-plus totals while also marking the first instance of three batters recording tons in a single World Cup innings.

Biggest successful CWC chase: Pakistan (345)

In match 8 of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Sri Lanka and Pakistan played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. Sri Lanka put up a gigantic score of 344/9 in 50 overs and were looking destined to win after quickly dispatching Pakistan’s top order’s Imam-ul-Haq and captain Babar Azam. However, opener Abdullah Shafique and Muhammad Rizwan both scored centuries and led Pakistan to a memorable win by 6 wickets.

Most CWC hundreds (7) and most international sixes (556): Rohit Sharma

Numerous records have been broken throughout the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 so far, one of which is Rohit Sharma’s record-extending 8th CWC century.

Standing records never stood a chance in front of Rohit Sharma, as he led his side to a comfortable win over Afghanistan in Delhi.

Rohit blazed 131 in just 84 balls as his team cruised past Afghanistan’s 272, eventually winning with 90 balls to spare.

In his trademark mix of brash and balance at the crease, the skipper blazed 16 fours and five sixes, completely dictating terms at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In the knock, he went clear of compatriot Sachin Tendulkar with seven Cricket World Cup centuries.

Incredibly, Rohit has achieved the record in just 19 innings and in only three World Cup campaigns, in comparison to Tendulkar’s 44 innings.

But it will be tough to reach Tendulkar’s record for the most runs at Cricket World Cups of 2278 at an average of 56.95, though Rohit boasts a superior average of 65.23 which is also the highest among players to reach four figures across the tournaments.

The five sixes Rohit struck in Delhi moved him to 556 sixes across the three formats of international cricket, passing the previous record-holder in the category is Chris Gayle.

Rohit managed to pass the West Indies opener in almost 80 fewer innings across the three formats (472).

Australia first time losing first two matches of a CWC since 1992

After losing their opening match by 6 wickets against hosts India, Australia succumbed to their second straight loss in Lucknow. This was just the third time that the Proteas beat Australia in the ODI World Cup.

This was also the first time since 1992 that Australia has lost its opening two matches in the World Cup. The last time this happened was in 1992 when Australia lost their opening two matches against New Zealand and South Africa.
