The world’s number one, Carlos Alcaraz, was forced to put his quest for the ‘Sunshine Double’ on hold due to rain at the Miami Open on Wednesday. The 18-year-old Spaniard is looking to defend his ATP Masters 1000 title and maintain his top spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
Alcaraz was set to play Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night, but the match was postponed due to rain. Alcaraz and Fritz will now face each other on Thursday night, as part of a revised Miami Open schedule.
Alcaraz’s impressive record in 2023
Alcaraz comes into the Miami Open quarterfinals with a 17-1 record in 2023. He won his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Miami last year, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. Alcaraz continued his winning run at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells earlier this month, winning his second ATP Tour title.
Aside from Alcaraz vs. Fritz, Thursday’s revised Miami Open schedule also includes two other quarterfinals. Fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev will face Christopher Eubanks, while former Miami semifinalist Francisco Cerundolo will take on Karen Khachanov.
Meanwhile, the women’s draw will feature two matches, with Elena Rybakina facing Jessica Pegula and Ekaterina Alexandrova playing Petra Kvitova.
