Adam Zampa Sets New World Cup Record: Surpasses Brad Hogg and Joins Legendary Spinners

In a stellar performance at the ongoing 2023 Cricket World Cup, Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa has etched his name in the record books, surpassing Brad Hogg and solidifying his place among legendary spinners. Zampa’s exceptional form played a pivotal role as Australia emerged as formidable title contenders.

Zampa Breaks Brad Hogg’s World Cup Record

During the clash against Bangladesh in Pune, Zampa showcased his prowess by taking two crucial wickets, surpassing Brad Hogg’s record tally of 21 dismissals in the 2007 edition. Zampa’s tally now stands at 22 wickets in the current tournament, making him the highest wicket-taker.

Zampa equaled Hogg’s record in the 17th over of the first innings, dismissing Liton Das (36) with a skillful delivery that found its way to Marnus Labuschagne at long-on. His record-breaking moment came in the 43rd over, claiming the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim (21), caught by Pat Cummins at short mid-wicket.

With 22 wickets in the ongoing World Cup, Zampa now stands only behind the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan, who scalped 23 dismissals in the 2007 edition. This remarkable achievement places Zampa ahead of iconic spinners like Brad Hogg, Shahid Afridi, and Shane Warne.

Zampa’s Remarkable Turnaround

Australia’s World Cup journey began on a challenging note, with Zampa going wicketless in their opening match against India. However, he orchestrated a turnaround with a four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka and maintained an impressive run, securing at least three scalps in his next four games.

Australia’s spin bowling coach, Danien Vettori, commended Zampa’s exceptional form, highlighting his control of length as the best seen in recent times. Vettori acknowledged Zampa’s skills and variations, emphasizing his ability to consistently land the ball in the right spot, limiting opponents’ opportunities to attack.

Speaking on Zampa’s form, Vettori stated, “I think his control of his length has been the best that I’ve seen in this period of time, particularly through those three games where he took four wickets in a row and then against England.”

As Adam Zampa cements his place in Australian cricket history with a record-breaking performance in the World Cup, his skill, control, and ability to adapt continue to impress. With the tournament progressing, Zampa’s contributions will be crucial for Australia’s aspirations of clinching the coveted title.
