IPL 2024: As the deadline approaches, talk rife of a mega player trade

With the imminent deadline for player retention and release in the Indian Premier League (IPL), there is growing speculation about a significant trade deal between two franchises, potentially involving the transfer of a team captain. While the teams involved have kept details under wraps, ongoing negotiations suggest a trade is in the works, with a deal expected to be finalized in the next two days before the retention deadline on November 26.

Chennai Super Kings are reportedly gearing up to release three additional players, aiming to enter the auction with approximately Rs 30 crore in funds. In addition to the confirmed release of Ben Stokes (Rs 16.25), surplus funds are expected from the release of retired IPL player Ambati Rayudu (Rs 6.75). The team management is also considering the release of South Africa’s Dwaine Pretorius and one among Sisanda Magala (South Africa) and Kyle Jamieson (New Zealand), both valued at Rs 1 crore.

While players like Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, and Shardul Thakur could potentially be released, there are speculations that Kolkata Knight Riders may retain Andre Russell. Delhi Capitals may undergo a significant overhaul, but specific player names are being kept confidential.

The IPL auction, set to take place in Dubai on December 19, is anticipated to witness the availability of top World Cup performers such as Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Travis Head, Rachin Ravindra, and Daryl Mitchell. It is expected that around 50 players will be purchased in the auction, and the IPL is scheduled to commence in mid-March following the conclusion of the India-England five-Test series on March 11.
