Lyon appoint former player Fabio Grosso as new head coach

Lyon appoint former Italian defender Fabio Grosso as their new head coach as he will replace Laurent Blanc, who left the French club by mutual consent after a poor start to the season.

Furthermore, Lyon are at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table with just one point in four games. Grosso will sign a one-year contract with the club with the option to extend his contract for an additional season, the club said in a statement.

The 45-year-old will watch the game against newly promoted side Le Havre from the stands on Sunday and will take charge of his new team from Monday onwards. Furthermore, deputy coach Jean-Francois Vulliez will oversee the Le Havre game.

Grosso won the World Cup with Italy playing as a left-back. Moreover, he scored the winning penalty in the World Cup final against France at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

The left-back played 75 games for Lyon from 2007 to 2009 and helped them to win the league and French Cup double in 2008, an era in which they dominated French football.

Last season, Grosso guided Italian club Frosinone to the second-tier Serie B title. But, his contract expired with Frosinone last season.

Furthermore, he has also coached Juventus’ Primavera side as well as senior clubs Bari, Hellas Verona, Brescia, FC Sion.
