IPL auction 2024: Pat Cummins, the Australian cricket captain, etched his name in IPL history by becoming the costliest player ever, commanding a staggering price that soared beyond the Rs 20 crore mark. Sunrisers Hyderabad secured the services of Cummins for an impressive Rs 20.5 crore during the auction on Tuesday.
The bidding war initially unfolded between CSK and MI, but RCB swiftly entered the fray, intensifying the competition. Subsequently, SRH joined the tug of war, leading to an enthralling and intense bidding battle for Cummins.
Known for his previous stints with Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, Cummins had fetched a then-record sum of Rs 15.5 crore in the 2020 auction. Despite being released, KKR repurchased him for a substantial amount two seasons later. Cummins showcased his prowess in the IPL with a remarkable 14-ball half-century, a performance that stands as the joint second-fastest fifty in IPL history.
In his IPL career spanning 42 matches, Cummins has secured 45 wickets at an economy rate of 8.54 and contributed with the bat, amassing 359 runs. Renowned for his leadership, Cummins led Australia to triumph in the World Test Championship, retained the Ashes in England, and secured victory against India at home to claim the ODI World Cup.
Pat Cummins sees IPL 2024 as ideal preparation for T20 World Cup
After opting out of the 2023 IPL season with Kolkata Knight Riders, citing a heavy workload due to various international commitments, Cummins is set to make a comeback. He views the 2024 IPL as ideal preparation for the T20 World Cup, scheduled to commence shortly after the IPL final.
With Sunrisers Hyderabad commencing the auction with Rs 34 crore and eventually signing Cummins, along with Travis Head and Wanindu Hasaranga, the team’s financial landscape was significantly altered, leaving them with Rs 5.2 crore. Cummins’ acquisition adds an extra layer of excitement to SRH’s lineup. This will elevate expectations for an impactful performance in the upcoming IPL season.
