Wrestlers protesting against WFI president involved in scuffle with Delhi Police
A scuffle broke out between the Delhi Police and a group of protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. The wrestlers were protesting against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, over allegations of sexual harassment. The incident occurred during a protest where the wrestlers demanded justice against Singh.
IOA Chief PT Usha meets protesting wrestlers
Earlier in the day, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief PT Usha visited the protest site and met with the protesting wrestlers. She assured them of her support and said that she was first an athlete and then an administrator.
Tokyo Games bronze medallist Bajrang Punia said that Usha had assured them help, even though initially they felt bad about her comments. However, she later clarified that her comments were misinterpreted.
The protestors told Usha that they were sitting there for the betterment of wrestling and wanted justice. They also stated that they did not have a fight with the government, opposition or anyone else. If the allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh were proved, they demanded legal action.
Seven women wrestlers who have accused Brij Bhushan Singh of sexual harassment have moved the Supreme Court. They have sought permission to file an affidavit in a sealed cover before the top court. The women wrestlers’ counsel mentioned the matter before a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha. The court is slated to hear the matter on Thursday.
Two FIRs registered against WFI chief
It is important to note that the Delhi Police had registered two FIRs against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Friday. The FIRs were based on complaints filed by the seven women wrestlers who have accused him of sexual harassment. The wrestlers have been protesting for justice against him since then.
The protestors have demanded justice and legal action against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The incident of scuffle with the Delhi Police highlights the intensity of the protest. The support from PT Usha and the move by the women wrestlers to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court also indicates that the demand for justice is growing louder. The authorities need to take necessary steps to ensure justice is served in this matter.
