William Saliba signs new Arsenal contract until 2027
France centre-back William Saliba signs new four-year Arsenal contract until 2027. The Frenchman will earn around £10 million a year.
Saliba’s previous contract was about to expire in 2024. Many clubs were willing to sign the centre-back, including the Premier League clubs. But Saliba always wanted to stay at Arsenal.
The 22-year-old follows his team-mates Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli and Aaron Ramsdale in signing a new contract with the North London side.
William Saliba signs new new four-year contract with Arsenal
Saliba was a key player last season as Arsenal challenged for the Premier League title. He missed the last 11 games of the season through injury, which coincided with a drop in form. Moreover, that saw Mikel Arteta’s side slip from the top of the table behind eventual champions Manchester City.
Saliba joined Arsenal from French side Saint-Etienne in 2019 for £27 million, but he spent significant spells out on loan. He returned to Saint-Etienne for the rest of the 2019-20 season.
He spent the first half of the 2020-21 campaign with Arsenal before moving to Nice in January. Saliba then had a season on loan with Marseille before returning to Arsenal last summer.
The French centre-back played 33 times in all competitions as Arsenal missed out on the title but qualified for the Champions League after after six years.
In addition to signing a new deal, Saliba has also been handed the number 2 squad number.
Mikel Arteta’s statements on Saliba
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Saliba: “To have William extend his contract with us was something we have wanted to do for a long time. William proved last season just how good and how important he is to our squad.”
“The ability he has at his young age of just 22 is exciting, and there is of course, so much more room for development with any player at this stage of their career.”
“We’re looking forward to continuing to work with William in the years to come.”
The news continues to be a busy summer for the club to date, with Kai Havertz having already joined and Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber on the verge of completing their arrivals.
