The Ashes 2023 Squads

Australia, at this point, is the only team to have announced their Ashes 2023 squad. They named that squad well ahead of the starting date of the series as they have also decided to go with the same squad for the WTC final against India.

The Aussies have announced a 17-men Ashes 2023 Squad which includes some very exciting names in the team, along with the base squad that faced India at their home.

For starters, Australia has gone with four pacemen attack up front. Mitchell Starc, Jos Hazlewood, Scott Boland, and skipper Pat Cummins are the four pillars of the team.

Warner's Woes Continue: Australian Opener Ruled Out of Final Two India Tests with Elbow Fracture

On top of the order, David Warner will feel the head of delivering to expectation, as Cricket Australia has named Marcus Harris in the reserves. Meaning that if David Warner fails to deliver again, he might find himself out of Australia’s Ashes 2023 squad.

Furthermore, to add depth to their lineup, the Kangaroos have recalled Mitchell Marsh to the team. Marsh has had a great time with both bat and ball in hand in the white ball cricket. However, he had failed to turn up in a red ball in the last few years.

Marsh has only played 1 first-class game in the last 2 years. And his last international test match came back in 2019 when Australia retained the Ashes in England. Therefore, his inclusion in the Ashes 2023 squad of Australia has met with several raised eyebrows. However, the selectors have justified that they only wanted to add “valuable depth and flexibility” to the squad.

A lot of anticipation was created around Australia unleashing “The Thing” Lance Morris of Western Australia on the England tour. However, that couldn’t come to pass the pace bowler picked up a niggle ahead of the squad announcement.

While many were banking on a comeback for Cameron Bancroft, that, didn’t happen. He was the leading run-scorer of the Marsh Sheffield Shield. Yet, he was looked over for the 18-man squad for India and now for the Ashes 2023 squad as well.

Aus vs SA: Alex Carey hits a record-breaking maiden test at MCG

The Onus will be on Alex Carey and Cameroon Greene to deliver in their maiden Ashes tour, along with paceman Scott Boland who made his overseas debut for Australia during the India tour.

Further, off-spinner will be expected to continue his theatrics with the ball in hand. The 22-year-old had an exceptional outing in his debut series against India. And hence was made a part of Australia’s squad’s part for the Ashes 2023.

All in all, the Ashes 2023 squad of Australia has a lot of potentials to offer. They have covered all the bases for the first two tests, and it will be interesting to see if their players perform to their potential.

On the other hand,, England has yet to announce their squad for the series. England is the home team; hence, they will always have the luxury to choose players based on merits because they can call up players at will if they have not found the right combination.

The Ashes 2023: Australia tour of England format

The Ashes 2023 series will be played in England, with five Test matches scheduled from 16th June onwards in England. The series will kick off with the first Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham, followed by the second Test at Lord’s in London, the third Test at Headingley in Leeds, the fourth Test at the Oval in London, and the fifth and final Test at Old Trafford in Manchester.

England will be looking to regain the Ashes after their disappointing 4-0 defeat in Australia in the 2020-21 series. Since then, England has had mixed fortunes in Test cricket, winning some series convincingly while losing others badly. However, they will take heart from their recent performances against India, where they managed to draw the series 2-2, despite going down 1-0 early on.

The Ashes 2023: Australia tour of England What to expect?

England has a strong core of experienced players, including Joe Root, Ben Stokes, James Anderson, and Stuart Broad. The return of Jofra Archer, who missed the India series due to injury, will also be a big boost for the English team. Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, and Ollie Pope have also shown glimpses of their potential and will look to cement their places in the team with strong performances in the Ashes.

On the other hand, Australia will be looking to continue their domination over England in Test cricket. They won the last Ashes series convincingly and have since performed strong in Test cricket, including winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India in their own backyard.

Their batting lineup, led by Steve Smith, David Warner, and Marnus Labuschagne, is one of the strongest in the world, and their pace attack, spearheaded by Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, is equally impressive.

Pat Cummins denies Justin Langer's 'cowards' comment in the Australian team

However, some question marks remain over Australia’s batting, particularly in English conditions. While Smith and Warner have been consistent performers in England, Travis Head, Cameron Green, and Matthew Wade must step up and provide support. Their spin bowling options are also limited, with Nathan Lyon being their only experienced spinner in the squad.

The Ashes 2023 promises to be a battle between two evenly matched teams, with both sides having strengths and weaknesses. The English conditions will likely favour swing and seam bowlers, which could give England an advantage with their experienced pace attack. However, Australia’s pace bowlers can exploit any weaknesses in the English batting lineup.

Off the field, the Ashes 2023 series is also likely to generate a lot of interest and excitement. The Ashes are not just a cricket series, but a cultural event, with a long history of passionate rivalry between the two nations. The atmosphere at the venues is likely to be electric, with the English and Australian fans cheering on their respective teams and engaging in friendly banter.
