Sumit Antil broke world records at National Para Athletics Championships

Sumit Antil, the Tokyo Paralympic gold medalist, broke his own world record in the F64 javelin throw category at the fifth Indian Open Para Athletics International Championships held in Bengaluru on Saturday. Antil bettered his throw of 68.62m in the 2022 edition by throwing 70.17m this time, setting a new world record.

Antil Qualifies for World Athletics Championships

Antil’s impressive throw of 70.17m has also qualified him for the 2023 World Athletics Championships. In an interview with ‘Sportstar’ after the Paralympics, Antil had said he wanted to cross the 75m-mark at the 2022 Asian Games before going for his ultimate dream of throwing beyond 80m. With his latest world record-breaking throw, Antil is one step closer to achieving his dream.

Apart from Antil, Yogesh Kathuniya and Pushpendra Singh also set new world records in their respective events. Kathuniya created a new world record of 46.79m in the men’s discus throw F55-57 category, while Singh sent the javelin soaring over 61.60m in the men’s F43 category. Both of them have also qualified for the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

On the same day, Neeraj Yadav bettered his own Asian record in men’s discus throw F55 category with a mark of 38.51m. The effort was seven centimetres more than his previous Asian best. With this impressive feat, Yadav has also qualified for the Worlds.

Impressive Performance by Indian Para Athletes

The Indian para-athletes have been showcasing exceptional performances in various international competitions, including the Paralympics, where they brought home a record haul of 19 medals, including five gold medals.

The fifth Indian Open Para Athletics International Championships in Bengaluru was another platform for the athletes to showcase their talent and hard work.
