Shubman Gill slams fifth ODI hundred joins Virat and Sachin in the list of batters to complete 1000 runs in a calendar year

Shubman Gill slammed his fifth hundred in ODI cricket in the Super Four clash against Bangladesh on Friday. The right-hander joined the list of batters to score 1000 runs in a calendar year in ODI’s which also includes the likes of Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. Gill played a fighting knock of 121 runs which took India close to the target of 266 set by Bangladesh in the dead rubber.

Gill has been in terrific form this year in international cricket. The opener has scored centuries in all three formats which also includes a double hundred that he scored in Hyderabad against New Zealand earlier this year.

The Elite List

The 24-year-old struck six fours and four sixes on his way to the hundred, reaching the three-figure score in 117 deliveries. Gill, in the process, crossed 1000 runs in the format in the calendar year 2023. He became the 13th Indian to achieve the feat. Sachin Tendulkar sits at the top of the list with 1894 runs in 1998.

Captain’s Corner

Indian captain Rohit Sharma praised Shubman’s effort. “It was brilliant. He backs his game, he knows how exactly he wants to play and pace the game. Very clear in his mind and knows what he wants to do for the team. Just look at his form for the year and the past. It was been just brilliant. Solid against the new ball, works extremely hard and there are no optional practices as well,” said Rohit.

One of the main features of Shubman’s consistent performance in ODI cricket this year has been his strike rate. The batter has scored more than 1,000 runs at a strike rate of 103.36

Despite Gill’s valiant effort India fell six runs short of the target and lost the last match of the Super Four stage of the tournament. The Men in Blue will now face host Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday and will look to win their eighth Asia Cup title to continue being the most successful team of the tournament.
