Badminton Asia Championships 2023: PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth make it to round 2, Lakshya Sen knocked out
On Wednesday, PV Sindhu, the bronze medalist at the 2022 edition of the Badminton Asia Championships, won her first-round match at the 2023 tournament in Dubai. The eighth-seeded Indian defeated Hsu Wen Chi of Chinese Taipei 21-15, 22-20 to advance to the round of 16. In the next round, Sindhu will face off against China’s Han Yue.
Kidambi Srikanth advances, Lakshya Sen knocked out
Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy, a mixed doubles team, also won their opening match, defeating Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See 21-12, 21-16. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, the women’s doubles bronze medalists at the Commonwealth Games, came from behind to beat Indonesia’s Lanny Tria Mayasari and Ribka Sugiarto 17-21, 21-17, 21-18 in a match lasting over an hour.
Kidambi Srikanth, a former world number one, advanced to the second round of the 2023 Badminton Asia Championships with a 21-13, 21-8 victory over Bahrain’s Adnan Ebrahim. In the next round, he will face fourth-seeded Japanese Kodai Naraoka. However, Lakshya Sen, the Commonwealth Games gold medalist, suffered a 7-21, 21-23 loss to former world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, and was knocked out of the tournament.
Malvika Bansod puts up a good fight
Despite being up against world number one Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, Malvika Bansod fought hard, but ultimately lost 23-25, 19-21 in a 46-minute battle.
H.S. Prannoy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also emerged victorious in their opening round matches. Prannoy defeated Myanmar’s Phone Pyae Naing 21-14, 21-9, while the men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat Tan Kian Meng and Tan Wee Kiong of Malaysia 21-14, 21-17.
