The Indian cricket team has made 7 changes in captaincy this year across different formats. And Shikhar Dhawan was the latest addition to the list when he captained the ODIs against West Indies.

He was all set to remain captain for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe. But a last-minute addition of KL Rahul to the squad changed that bit.

KL Rahul to replace Dhawan as captain

Rahul has been out of the international cricketing circuit for quite a while. He last featured in an ODI game in February 2022. Since then, he has been facing one stymie after the other.

Firstly, he got a sports hernia, which required to be operated upon. This saw him miss the England tour. Later he tested positive for CVOID19 ahead of the West Indies series. Hence was not able to partake in that series as well.

Now, finally, KL Rahul is all set to make his return to the Indian squad. And since he is the vice-captain under the reign of Rohit Sharma, the absence of Sharma makes him the eligible candidate for Captaincy.

Shikhar Dhawn on being removed from captaincy

Speaking about his removal from the captaincy role, Dhawan said, “It is a very good news that KL is back and will be leading the side as well. He is one of the main players of this Indian team. It will be a good outing for him before the Asia Cup gets underway. I am sure he will gain a lot from this tour.”

Dhawan is least interested in the captaincy role at the moment. He further said that he likes assisting the team in every way possible. Most of all, he enjoys sharing his experience with the youngsters. And that is what he looks forward to doing in the upcoming series.

India takes on Zimbabwe for three ODIs from the 18th of August.
