Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah has acquired several accolades in the recent past. And is about to receive one of the biggest feathers in the hat in the form of Indian test Captaincy.

Yes, according to PTI reports, Jasprit Bumrah is all set to become the captain of the Indian test team. This development came into existence after the current skipper Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19.

Talking about this, a senior BCCI official told PTI, “Rohit Sharma is out of this test match, starting July 1, as his RT-PCR test has come positive again. He is still in isolation. Jasprit Bumrah who is a vice-captain in the absence of KL Rahul, will lead the team.’

If the news is absolute truth, then Bumrah will become the only 36th player to captain India in this format. Also, he will be the first fast bowler in 35 years to do so. Kapil Dev was the last pace bowler to captain the Indian test team back in 1987.

It should not come as a surprise that Bumrah has been handed the reign of the Indian team. Previously the chief selector Chetan Sharma has been quoted calling Bumrah a future leader. The selectors are willing to groom the 28-year-old as a future captain. And this can be the perfect occasion to put their theory to the test.

The young gun from Gujarat is no mug in the test cricket. He has played 29 matches for his side and picked 123 wickets in them.

Although it will be a new challenge for Bumrah, he won’t be alone. Along with him is an experienced contingent of players like Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and the coaching staff led by Rahul Dravid.

The final test between India and England will be played from the 1st of July at Edgebaston.
