CWG 2022: Top 5 performances by Indian Athletes

The Commonwealth Games were held in Birmingham in 2022. The games commenced on July 28 and finished off on August 8. An aggregate of 280 events occurred across 20 sports, and 72 nations participated in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Out of 72 countries, India bagged a total of 61 medals. Indian athletes finished fourth with 22 gold medals, 16 silver medals, and 23 bronze medals. It was India’s 18th appearance in the CWG 2022. In the Indian team, 106 men and 104 women took part in 16 sports overall.

All the performances were fabulous by every athlete. Here we illustrate a few illustrious performances made by Indian athletes.

Saurav Ghosal – Bronze in Squash Men’s Singles

Saurav Ghosal, a 35-year-old athlete, contributed to the squash men’s single event. He won the bronze medal for his country. Saurav Ghosal made her debut in 2010. Ghoshal also participated in 2014 and ended up in the 4th season. However, he won bronze in the 22nd Commonwealth Games.

He won the bronze medal by beating James Willstrop of England. James Willstrop was the former number one athlete in squash. But he was defeated by Saurav Ghosal 11-6, 11-1, and 11-4. Saurav Ghosal became the first single performer in squash history to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Avinash Sable, runner-up in the 3000m steeplechase

Avinash Sagar is the first Indian athlete to win the men’s steeplechase over 3000m. He was first in the battle, but in the last few microseconds, he was surpassed by Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot. In that championship, he registered his best score of 8:11.20.

He also set the national record in steeplechase with a time of 8:11.20. He also contributed to the World Championship in Eugene, Oregon for men’s steeplechase 3000m. where he filled the 11th position. He also bagged several awards in different categories.

He grabbed the national awards for the 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, and half marathon.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won gold in weightlifting

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu earned the first gold medal in Birmingham at CWG 2022. At CWG 2022, Mirabai Chanu participated in the women’s 49kg weight lifting tournament.

She bagged gold by lifting 201 kg. Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai Chanu received the Padma Shri award in 2018 and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna.

Sudhir Singh wins gold in the para powerlifting heavyweight category

Sudhir participated in the Birmingham CWG 2022. He took part in the category of para powerlifting in heavyweight. In the para powerlifter category, there were a total of four athletes from India; two men and two women. Sudhir won gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games on August 4th.

Sudhir is impaired due to polio. Sudhir first lifted 208 KG, then won the gold by lifting 212 in his second effort. Also, Sudhir claimed bronze in the World Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championship by lifting 214 KG in June in South Korea.

Sushila Devi Likmabam silver in Judo women’s 48kg

Sushila Devi Likmaba is an Indian judoka player. She won the silver medal for the country in Birmingham, CWG 2022. She won the silver in the women’s 48 kg weight category. She also bagged a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games 2014 in the women’s 48kg category.

Sushila Likmabam and opponent Michaela Whitebooi have given each other stiff competition. And not any of them scored a single point in the last round. So they both got into the golden score round, where Michaela Whitebooi scored and won the match. So Shushila received a silver in judo at CWG 2022.

Wrapping up

Other athletes made their CWG 2022 debuts and won medals. Eldhose Paul won the gold in the triple jump. Nitu Ghanghas won the gold in boxing in the women’s minimumweight category. Nikhat Zareen won gold in boxing in the women’s light flyweight category.

Furthermore, Sreeja Akula won in table tennis. Jermy Lalrinnunga won the gold in weightlifting in the men’s 67kg category. Achinta Sheuli won the gold in weightlifting in the men’s 73 kg category.

Overall it was an excellent performance by the Indian Athletes, one that will be remembered for years to come.
